Understanding the Hereditary Nature of Alcoholism

Written on

Chapter 1: The Roots of Alcoholism

If you've faced challenges with alcohol misuse, you might question the origins of that urge to drink. Did it stem from past traumas, peer pressure, or simply a desire to fit in? In discussions with my therapist, it became evident that my early drinking habits in my teenage years were partly a means to escape the emotional turmoil inflicted by my narcissistic adoptive mother and the bullying I endured from peers.

Alcohol can serve as a powerful mechanism for avoidance, enabling individuals to sidestep significant issues. For me, during my teenage years, it provided an entrance into adulthood while allowing me to disregard my troubles. When life became overwhelming, the pub always offered a refuge.

In addition to its escapist qualities, I genuinely enjoy the taste of alcoholic beverages—particularly lager and white wine, which I find delightful. If only I could relish that flavor without the associated health risks...

Society often casts individuals struggling with alcohol in a negative light, portraying them as damaged or victims of unfortunate circumstances. Conversely, those who drink are frequently seen as charismatic and successful. The prevailing narrative suggests that alcoholism arises from significant life adversities.

Section 1.1: The Question of Heredity

What happens when someone with a seemingly idyllic childhood still succumbs to alcohol? Today, it's not uncommon to hear about celebrities revealing their past as heavy drinkers despite their success.

My adoptive mother has rarely spoken about my biological mother, admitting only that she visited our home multiple times, which prevented me from meeting her. It's often implied that my birth mother was troubled, perhaps even a heavy drinker.

I learned she passed away in her forties due to liver cancer, hinting at possible alcohol misuse. Yet, I also had a long-term girlfriend who succumbed to liver cancer in her thirties without ever drinking much.

It's easy to twist facts to support a personal narrative.

From what I've gathered, my biological father served in the military and was a fitness instructor, suggesting a lifestyle that would typically discourage heavy drinking. As evidenced by the numerous stories I share about my struggles with alcohol, I have delved deeply into research on this topic. Recent articles and medical reviews indicate a genetic link to alcoholism.

Research suggests that having an alcoholic parent increases the likelihood of developing similar habits by four times, hinting that those children may be destined for addiction from the start.

However, the situation is rarely that straightforward. Neither of my adoptive parents drank, and I wasn't exposed to drinking culture as a child. Instead, I faced gaslighting, control, and bullying.

Even with a genetic predisposition, there's no certainty that one will develop drinking problems. Nonetheless, it's intriguing that the odds might be stacked against someone before they even begin their journey in life.

I lack concrete evidence that my biological mother was an alcoholic. My adoptive mother seems determined to uphold the narrative that my adoption benefited everyone involved, possibly fabricating the story of my birth mother's alcoholism to justify her choices.

Regrettably, I may never uncover the truth. My birth mother passed away before I had the chance to know her. For years, I was led to believe she was not someone I would want in my life—then it was too late.

My attraction to the hereditary aspect of addiction stems from my swift embrace of alcohol. I never hesitated to indulge, at least not until it spiraled out of control.

While I don't aim to evade accountability, the ease with which I fell into drinking habits raises questions about whether I was predisposed to addiction. In a way, I feel fortunate that alcohol was my vice. Now that I am sober, I have the chance to address its long-term effects. Reflecting on the opportunities I've lost reminds me that, without a natural off switch for addiction, I could have easily become dependent on something far more detrimental.

Ultimately, I remain ambivalent about the hereditary nature of addiction. Scientific perspectives suggest some individuals are born with a higher propensity for addiction. However, establishing a definitive connection is challenging. If I had experienced what society deems a "normal" childhood, would I still have succumbed to alcoholism?

Conversely, many who have endured difficult childhoods choose not to drink. While links between addiction and poverty are established, many view alcohol and drugs as a means of escaping their struggles. This is compounded by society's normalization of drinking culture.

Opening a bottle and choosing to drink is ultimately a personal decision. Whether genetics play a role in that choice is debatable. In contemporary Western culture, drinking is often viewed as a positive action that enhances life.

Life is rife with risks. Being born with a higher likelihood of alcoholism is merely another gamble. Although my sobriety came later than I would have preferred, I strive to demonstrate that it's possible to transcend societal pressures and one's genetic background to experience life authentically.
