Prioritize Yourself: The Importance of Scheduled Alone Time

Chapter 1: The Importance of Self-Care
In our daily lives, much of our time revolves around the needs of others. For instance, I follow a strict routine: I wake up early, feed my cats, and commute to work along the same route. My mornings are often spent managing emails, while my afternoons are filled with client meetings. Evenings, though seemingly free, are governed by a set routine where my partner and I divide household chores and enjoy our favorite shows together. Sometimes, I even write while he cooks or cleans. Then, it’s off to bed with a book or a podcast, only to repeat it all again the next day.
While I genuinely appreciate my job, my writing, and the joy my partner and pets bring, there’s a crucial aspect missing: dedicated time for myself. In our hyper-connected world of 2019, we are constantly reachable, bombarded with notifications, and able to interact with people across the globe. While this connectivity has its advantages, it often leads to neglecting our own needs.

Section 1.1: The Cost of Connectivity
Too often, we fail to carve out moments of solitude. When we do find ourselves alone, it's usually accompanied by distractions like online gaming, social media, or podcasts. This constant engagement with the outside world can be detrimental to our well-being. Despite our busy schedules, we manage to prioritize what matters to us — yet, paradoxically, time for ourselves rarely makes the cut.
I’m not suggesting we lack opportunities for relaxation; rather, we don’t actively plan for it. We often wait for free moments to squeeze in self-care, which is not the same as intentionally setting aside time.
The first video, "How To Make Time For Yourself," discusses the significance of prioritizing personal time and offers practical strategies for doing so.
Section 1.2: The Benefits of Solitude
Psychologically, alone time can be incredibly rewarding. When disconnected from external influences, we often tap into our most creative selves. Personally, I've discovered that my scheduled alone time sparks numerous ideas — from writing prompts to culinary experiments. Initially, it may feel uncomfortable to embrace solitude, but it's essential for enhancing our empathy and self-awareness.
Being alone allows for personal reflection, free from the personas we adopt around others. This practice not only boosts creativity and productivity but also provides a reprieve from the relentless demands of daily life.
The second video, "How To Make Time For Yourself," further explores the importance of scheduling personal time and the positive impact it can have on your life.
Chapter 2: Making Yourself a Priority
To prioritize yourself, you may need to make some sacrifices. I used to write two stories daily, but as stress mounted, I realized I needed to refocus on self-care. Now, I dedicate at least half an hour each day solely for myself, regardless of what else is happening.
What does this time involve? It varies — from doodling and attempting meditation (which sometimes turns into a nap) to enjoying a nice coffee or going for a walk. I leave my phone behind, ensuring that this time is genuinely for me. Just as I wouldn’t check social media during a meeting or while writing, my personal time deserves the same respect.
It might feel odd to treat self-care with the same importance as work or relationships, but it’s essential. Limiting external distractions during this time allows for deeper introspection and renewal.
In conclusion, take the initiative to schedule time for yourself. Whether you use a digital calendar, set an alarm, or jot a note, what matters is that you consistently prioritize alone time. Break free from external influences, even if just for a few minutes each day, and make yourself the focus of your own life.
