Explaining Employment Gaps: 6 Effective Strategies

Chapter 1: Understanding Employment Gaps
In recent times, I've noticed a significant increase in discussions regarding how candidates are often questioned or penalized during job interviews for having gaps in their CVs. The pandemic has certainly intensified this issue, but it's not a new phenomenon. It’s encouraging to see that more individuals are voicing their experiences related to this challenge.
Having faced the reality of six corporate layoffs throughout my career (yes, you read that correctly…SIX!), I have gained valuable insights into managing gaps in employment. My last three layoffs were intentional, as I made a conscious decision to create space in my career. Why, you ask?
When we find ourselves endlessly busy, responding to every demand, we often neglect the time needed for reflection and creativity. By stepping away from the daily grind, our minds can relax, which facilitates innovative thinking and planning. This time can also be utilized to learn new skills that will make you a standout candidate in future roles.
Don't just take my word for it; there's a wealth of research supporting this perspective.
Here are six strategies I implemented during my employment gaps, each of which has positively impacted my career. I encourage you to try one or more of these approaches—you may find they yield beneficial results as well! 🙌 Each strategy holds equal significance.
Section 1.1: Personal Projects
- Home Renovation: With my first severance payment, I took a leap and invested in a house alongside my husband. I spent six months away from the job market, resulting in the successful completion of our home project.
- Running: Initially, I struggled to run even 1 km without needing to stop. However, by committing to run 2-3 times a week and gradually increasing my distance, I was able to complete my first public race, the 'City to Surf' in Sydney, in under 100 minutes. I became significantly fitter in just five months!
Section 1.2: Professional Development
- Leadership Coaching Certification: I pursued a Level 1 Leadership Coaching certification, which requires less time than a traditional degree. I completed over 25 hours of coaching and am now prepared for Level 2 training, which has been delayed due to Covid. This skill is invaluable for current and aspiring leaders, and it has enhanced my CV.
- Consulting Business: Although it may sound grand, I operated a small consulting business, where I helped private firms secure funding for growth. Over 18 months, I expanded my professional network beyond banking, which proved advantageous in my current role on the Advisory Board of a Blockchain Crypto start-up.
Chapter 2: Building Relationships and Skills

- Celebrating Milestones Globally: I prioritize living life to the fullest and embracing opportunities to travel. I cherished celebrating significant birthdays and family gatherings, including my mother's 85th birthday last November. Time spent with loved ones is irreplaceable. ❤️
- Community Volunteering: I dedicated my time to supporting my twins' high school and rugby club by conducting mock interviews and mentoring students on their business plans. Additionally, I served on the Annual Fundraising Gala committee and was the MC for two consecutive years. This involvement sharpened my public speaking skills, which are essential in any profession. 😎
