In today's technology-driven world, rapid communication has become the norm. While this progress can be beneficial, it also poses risks if we aren't cautious about our language.
The Bible advises us to exercise control over our speech. As stated in Proverbs 10:19-21, "In a multitude of words, sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise." The passage emphasizes that the righteous are valued, whereas the wicked fall short. Furthermore, Jesus highlighted that our verbal expressions mirror our inner thoughts (Matthew 15:1–20).
How should Christians steer clear of certain types of speech?
Section 1.1: Deceptive Words
Lying is expressly forbidden: "Therefore, putting away lying, ‘Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,’ for we are members of one another" (Ephesians 4:25). Additionally, Colossians 3:9 reinforces this by stating, "Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds." Falsehood is fundamentally opposed to Christian values, as it embodies the nature of Satan (John 8:44), while God embodies truth and cannot lie (Titus 1:2).
Section 1.2: Corrupt Language
Christians are cautioned against using corrupt or unwholesome language. Ephesians 4:29 warns, "Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth." This entails avoiding speech that is harmful or destructive rather than uplifting.
Subsection 1.2.1: Slanderous Speech
Ephesians 4:31 instructs, "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice." This includes slanderous remarks that can injure others. Such negative speech is increasingly prevalent in online discussions, particularly regarding political topics.
Section 1.3: Vulgar Expressions
Ephesians 5:4 advises against any form of filthy language: "But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness..." Similarly, Colossians 3:8 calls for the removal of "filthy language out of your mouth." Vulgar speech is deemed inappropriate for Christians and should not be part of their vocabulary.
Section 1.4: Foolish Talk
The scripture also warns against foolish talk: "…nor foolish talking…" (Ephesians 5:4). This type of dialogue is both foolish and sinful, diverting attention from more meaningful conversations.
Section 1.5: Coarse Jesting
Ephesians 5:4 continues with a caution against "nor coarse jesting." Vincent explains that this refers to polished yet sinful speech that lacks the grace inherent in Christian communication. Such humor can often disguise inappropriate content, making it unsuitable for believers.
In conclusion, the manner in which Christians choose their words carries significant weight.
