In today's world, there truly is an app for nearly every need, from nurturing houseplants to tracking celestial movements. The rise of high-quality applications allows us to effortlessly chase our aspirations and interests. While I've discussed numerous apps that enrich various aspects of my life, I want to focus on two specific applications that have profoundly impacted me.

These apps are both centered on health, require some financial investment (though not entirely), and demand active user participation rather than passively running in the background.

Section 1.1: Garmin Connect

Garmin Connect is a complimentary app designed to work with Garmin health watches. While the app itself is free, it does necessitate the purchase of a compatible device. I acquired the Garmin MARQ Athlete Gen 2 last summer and, despite owning a collection of luxury timepieces, it has scarcely left my wrist since June 2023.

This sophisticated health application allows me to monitor nearly every facet of my wellbeing, from physical activity to stress levels and sleep quality. It has completely reshaped my understanding of health, making it a genuinely transformative experience.

The influence of both the watch and the app on my life cannot be overstated. It serves not only as a fitness coach but also as a comprehensive health mentor, right on my wrist.

My sleep has improved significantly, and I’ve taken up regular running—completing 10km three times since I began using this watch, an achievement I had never reached before. Currently, I run 5k multiple times a week and feel that I am in the best shape of my adult life.

I now wear my watch to bed every night, providing me with valuable insights into my sleep patterns. For instance, on a night when I was battling a fever, my sleep score was notably low.

I've also observed how alcohol consumption affects my heart rate overnight, leading to a reassessment of my drinking habits. Although I've never been a heavy drinker, I used to consume alcohol quite regularly. MyFitnessPal is another app I’ve recently embraced, utilizing it for about a month to monitor my food and drink intake, allowing for a more mindful approach to my diet. Remarkably, I've lost 14 pounds in this time simply by adhering to a net calorie intake goal.

The app integrates with Garmin Connect, receiving updates on my physical activities. I maintain a daily caloric target of 1,720, and it accounts for the calories I burn to ensure I stay below that limit.

For example, after running 5K this morning and walking a bit, I burned approximately 750 calories. I opted for a brunch of about 700 calories instead of breakfast, putting me below my daily goal.

Even after a business lunch yesterday at London’s Paris Grill, I was able to stay well under my daily caloric target.

What has surprised me the most is the caloric content of foods I previously considered healthy. For instance, I consumed only 45g of Jordan's Granola for breakfast along with some fruit, followed by a Daal Soup for lunch and some fruit; these two meals totaled a surprising 964 calories! I would have thought I was making healthy choices before.

With this app, I'm diligently tracking my food and drink intake. Together, these two applications ensure that my physical efforts do not go to waste and that I maintain a responsible approach to my diet. I'm on track to meet my weight loss goal ahead of schedule, aiming for my target weight by the end of March, with plans to achieve my lowest adult weight by June 1st.
