Discovering Myself: A Journey Through the Get To Know Me Challenge

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to the Challenge

In April, I was invited by Carrie to participate in a fun and introspective challenge called "Get To Know Me."

A reflective moment in my journey of self-discovery

I apologize for the delay, but now seems like an opportune moment to dive in. As I mentioned in Part I, prioritizing my well-being involves rediscovering who I am. It’s interesting how we often lose touch with ourselves over time, isn’t it? You’d think staying in tune would come naturally, but it takes conscious effort.

Let’s embark on this journey of self-discovery together, shall we?

Section 1.1: Writing Habits

  1. When it comes to writing, do you consider yourself a morning or night person?

I’d say I’m more of a “whenever I can find time to sit at my keyboard” person. When I’m in a good mental space with balanced sleep and morning routines, I tend to write in the mornings. However, when life throws me a curveball of anxiety, my writing often shifts to the evenings. I appreciate the flexibility, although writing in the morning generally feels more fulfilling.

That said, there’s something special about late-night writing sessions.

Section 1.2: Culinary Preferences

  1. Given the choice, would you prefer to cook, order in, or dine out?

Honestly, I’d love to have a personal chef! I’ve never had the luxury, but I dream of enjoying home-cooked meals without the hassle. Is that laziness? Perhaps, but I suspect many share that sentiment. Cooking isn’t my forte; I’d much rather someone passionate about it whip something up for me.

Left to my own devices, I usually opt for convenience over culinary delight, often resorting to quick snacks like cucumbers or lettuce.

Chapter 2: Entertainment Choices

  1. Do you watch live TV, or do you lean towards streaming services like Netflix or Hulu?

Streaming wins for me, especially if those are my only options. Personally, I prefer having the files to watch at my own pace. The wait for new episodes can be excruciating—just look at "The Sandman," which I adore, but the uncertainty of its continuation is nerve-wracking. I was also invested in "Wheel of Time," but that seems to be a lost cause now.

  1. Are you a fan of musicals?

Absolutely! "Rent" is an absolute must-see—it’s brilliant. If you haven’t seen it, trust me, your life won’t feel complete until you do. As for "Cats," it was the first musical I ever watched, and while it was fine, it doesn’t hold a candle to "Rent." "Sweeney Todd" is also worth a watch, but it's not a must-see.

This video features a powerful performance of "This Is Me" from The Greatest Showman, showcasing the strength of individuality and self-acceptance.

  1. What's your preferred movie genre?

I gravitate towards psychological thrillers or anything that plays with my mind. Whether it’s horror, fantasy, or even comedy, I enjoy films that challenge my perceptions and make me question reality.

  1. What frightens you the most?

Honestly, I’m not entirely sure anymore. It feels like a vague answer, but after two decades of anxiety, I struggle to identify what I truly fear. My genuine emotions often get lost in a constant barrage of ‘what ifs’ that cloud my thoughts.

  1. Can you share a frightening experience from your life?

— Trigger warning —

The day we lost our cat, Mew, was terrifying. He was our beloved companion, and at 13 years old, he seemed perfectly healthy until his heart suddenly failed at the vet. They managed to stabilize him for a short time, but after 36 hours of distress, he let out a heart-wrenching wail. We rushed him to an emergency clinic where my partner performed CPR throughout the ordeal.

It turned out he had been suffering from a rare heart defect. The whole experience left us traumatized, and we still have nightmares about that weekend.

  1. How many TV theme songs can you sing along to?

I have no idea! I probably know the lyrics to a handful, but I haven’t kept track. While I have a decent memory for lyrics, it’s not something I focus on.

  1. Are you a parent or grandparent?

Yes! My child is now 19, and I hope to have another little one in the future.

  1. Beyond writing, do you have other artistic talents?

I’m the first in my family to have a good singing voice. I once aspired to be a singer before realizing my true passion lay in writing. The idea of being in the spotlight felt overwhelming, which foreshadowed the anxiety that would come later in life.

I feel drawn to various forms of art, but I’m only average at most of them. If I invested more time, perhaps I could improve, but my primary focus has always been writing.

This reflection was enlightening! I realize now that my earlier dream of becoming a singer may have hinted at my struggles with anxiety. Back then, I didn't recognize those feelings, but now I wonder if they were always there.

Thank you, Carrie!

As for tagging others in this challenge, I’d like to nominate Lorna Dolan and You Good? — assuming they haven’t already participated. And to you, dear reader, I choose you!
