The Two Arrows: Transforming Suffering Through Attitude Choice

Chapter 1: Understanding the Arrow of Judgement and Suffering

Consider a moment when you attempted to manipulate someone or a situation to align with your desires. Did it unfold as you anticipated? If not, what were the underlying factors? From my perspective, exerting control over external circumstances often fails, as reality tends to be more formidable.

Instead, we should embrace our circumstances and adjust our mindset regarding what exists. You might be thinking, "Are you suggesting I simply accept something I detest?" The answer is both yes and no.

We must acknowledge elements we cannot alter, as there are times when we are powerless to change them. While you don't need to appreciate what's occurring, accepting it can diminish your pain and anguish, enabling you to choose a path toward inner tranquility and liberation.

It's crucial to understand that acceptance does not equate to resignation or indifference. It represents a conscious recognition of our current situation. This doesn't imply that conditions cannot improve over time. However, in the present moment, the situation is what it is, and we should release our resistance to how we wish things could be.

This point deserves reiteration: we need not enjoy our circumstances; we can accept them and work with our current reality.

This concept brings to mind the parable of The Two Arrows, in which the Buddha illustrates a person struck by an arrow, experiencing pain. He poses the question to his students: "What if this individual is hit by a second arrow in the same spot?" The added suffering arises from the judgment surrounding that second arrow.

The Buddha asserts that while we cannot control the first arrow—symbolizing life's unforeseen events—we have agency over our reaction to the second arrow, driven by our judgments.

In a similar vein, the Dalai Lama remarked: "Pain is unavoidable. Suffering is a choice." Life will inevitably present unexpected challenges, and it's prudent to refrain from judgment, as it only compounds our suffering. We must accept the hand life deals us without succumbing to the pains and disappointments that arise.

Can you do this? Can you permit yourself to release resistance and cultivate inner peace? It may necessitate tapping into your inner wisdom to embrace circumstances beyond your control.

Chapter 2: The Freedom to Choose Your Attitude

In other words, attempting to dominate reality leads to suffering since our control is limited to ourselves and our responses. If you've been in a close relationship and tried to manage your partner, you've likely encountered conflict and pushback.

However, if you accept them as they are, the aspects that trouble you may shift. While there are no guarantees, you will have transformed yourself and discovered inner peace—an essential pursuit that surpasses the desire to change others.

We must shift our perception to view situations differently. People will disappoint us, and circumstances will not always be in our favor; thus, striving to control what we can't will only result in misery. Ultimately, life is not about controlling others or external factors, as these lie beyond our reach.

Once we acknowledge what we cannot change, we break free from those chains and can experience peace and liberation. This process might require practice, as the ego tends to cling to control.

This attachment to control is misleading; if we cannot govern others or external factors, our ability to shape reality is severely restricted. Therefore, we can liberate ourselves from the shackles of control and choose our responses.

By doing so, we open ourselves to limitless possibilities and accept everything that grants us the freedom to be ourselves. This freedom is not dictated by others' opinions or actions, nor is it influenced by our circumstances; an individual who embraces reality is empowered to choose their attitude, which represents true strength.

Chapter 3: Embracing Acceptance as a Path to Change

"The first step toward change is awareness. The second step is acceptance." — Nathaniel Branden

Reflect on the earlier scenario or individual I prompted you to consider. It might have been a family member, friend, or partner you attempted to control. It could have involved a desired job, a new apartment, or a gadget.

Whatever the case, revisit that experience and evoke the emotions it stirred. When I pose this question to clients, they often identify feelings of anger, frustration, resentment, or disappointment.

If our emotions serve as a gauge for our life's journey, negative feelings should alert us that something is amiss in our thoughts or actions. In essence, the adverse emotions you experience when trying to control others or situations are life's way of signaling you to mind your own business.

Thus, I encourage you to identify one or two situations you've been trying to manage. Ask yourself if you could accept the circumstances as they are, even if just for a day. Observe how this impacts your feelings. Do you experience inner peace, freedom, or a sense of calm?

If you find the practice beneficial, extend it for another day, continuing for seven days or more. I often suggest clients use a habit tracker app on their smartphones to monitor how long they can maintain acceptance of a challenging situation until it no longer causes distress.

You can achieve this as well. It may not be straightforward initially, but the benefits of non-resistance outweigh the drawbacks of clinging to situations beyond your control. When we accept life as it unfolds, we liberate ourselves from negativity and align our actions with reality.
