Revisiting Perception: The Power of Seeing Beyond the Surface
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Our Senses
The act of seeing is often taken for granted, yet it is intricately tied to our other senses: feeling, hearing, smelling, touching, and tasting. These senses are collectively known as our common senses, shared with many non-verbal creatures that also experience the world in unique ways.
Seeing is a multifaceted sense, influenced by numerous factors. The distinctions between watching, seeing, and looking can often blur. How is it possible to look and not truly see? When was the last time you considered yourself as a collection of words? Our individual perceptions shape how we interpret language.
Seeing isn't confined to the physical act of using our eyes; it also encompasses the metaphorical 'third eye' that remains open, even during sleep. This includes dreaming, daydreaming, and experiencing optical illusions. Your self-image is something you cannot outgrow. Everything you perceive is colored by your perspective, which may reflect truth at times, and at others may not.
With approximately 9 billion people in the world, each person possesses their own version of truth. Those who fail to appreciate the rhythm of life might misinterpret the joyful movements of others as madness. If you struggle to comprehend what you see, consider that you are the one in control of the narrative; you are the projectionist in your life. Art is not merely about what is observed but how artists guide you to see beyond the surface.

"Throughout my life, I've viewed words as though encountering them anew each time." — Ernest Hemingway
