Mastering Medium: Efficient Editing Strategies and Insights

Chapter 1: Introduction to Editing on Medium

Welcome to an essential guide for editors and writers! This resource will help you become an efficient and fair editor on Medium. Understanding the editing process on this platform is crucial, as these skills will also enhance your writing abilities.

Currently, I am awaiting a response from Medium regarding a comment on my unlisted article. In the meantime, I’ve received valuable feedback on utilizing Google Sheets to manage our editing schedule and recruitment process.

Despite receiving some backlash about including recruitment in editing responsibilities, I firmly believe in collective growth. Creating a publication without financial compensation is purely for our collective learning and success.

For those familiar with Medium, the importance of community support in nurturing a publication is clear. While recruitment is part of the editor's role at "Anyone Can Write Online," it is by no means the sole responsibility. It would be impractical to think otherwise.

To the critic who accused me of running a scam, I gently suggest that perhaps Medium or online writing isn't your path. Recruitment and editing naturally align, especially in the early stages of building a publication. This synergy benefits all involved, fostering growth and success.

If you’re not interested in recruitment, please let me know, and I can easily remove you from the editorial team. We all have different interests, and this will allow someone else to step into the role.

It's important to note that recruitment is not a permanent task. As our community grows, we will adjust accordingly. With 2.8k followers, I no longer need to actively recruit for "The Orange Journal"; new writers discover us daily.

Currently, we have about 30 editors, which I believe is our limit for now, pending a response from Medium. Each editor is expected to dedicate one day a week to review submissions and recruit five new individuals using a straightforward method. Your commitment should not exceed 20 minutes a day—if it does, there might be an issue with the process.

How do I know this? Unlike "The Orange Journal," "Anyone Can Write Online" doesn’t have strict editorial guidelines. That’s the point: enabling writers to submit freely without the burden of formatting rules.

The goal is to write, submit, get published quickly, analyze performance, and adjust as needed.

11 Steps to Effective Editing

See the video below for a detailed breakdown:

On your designated day, open pending submissions in separate tabs (I usually manage five at once). Remember, you’re sharing this time with others. Eventually, we expect an influx of submissions, hence the need for extra coverage from the start.

Ensure each piece is relevant to writing and coherent. Currently, we only accept submissions in English to avoid complications.

We have a zero-tolerance policy against any form of hate speech or violence. If a submission promotes hate, please remove it from the queue.

Send a personal note thanking the writer for their submission (address them by name). No substantial edits are necessary! Recommendations are welcome but not required, which is one of the key features of our publication.

If you're scheduling a piece in advance, inform the writer of their scheduled time. Once a piece is scheduled, it will be removed from drafts. Articles should be spaced 10 to 20 minutes apart.

There are no strict length requirements, and we gladly accept affiliate articles, provided they include mandatory disclaimers.

Please remember that all submissions must have an image and proper citation. If they don’t, kindly ask the writer to add one and notify you once it’s done.

The aim is to keep this process as straightforward as possible so we can maximize our experience together.

What suggestions do you have for improvement?

Happy editing!
