The World's Most Isolated Place: Point Nemo
Written on
Chapter 1: The Isolation of Point Nemo
Point Nemo, the most secluded spot on Earth, is located in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. This remarkable point is situated 2,700 kilometers from the nearest land in any direction. If you were to draw a circle with Point Nemo at its center and a radius of 2,700 kilometers, you'd find no landmass, not even the smallest island, within that circle.
Interestingly, the closest humans are often the astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) when it orbits above at an altitude of 490 kilometers. The name "Point Nemo" is inspired by Captain Nemo from Jules Verne's classic novel, "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea." In Latin, "Nemo" translates to "no one," which fittingly reflects the point's isolation.
The coordinates for Point Nemo are 48°52.6′S 123°23.6′W. This location was first identified in 1992 by Croatian-Canadian geodetic engineer Hrvoje Lukatela. Due to its remoteness, Point Nemo serves as a designated resting area for spacecraft that have reached the end of their operational life.
Section 1.1: The Role of Point Nemo in Spacecraft Disposal
When the ISS is scheduled for decommissioning in 2030, it will reenter Earth's atmosphere and disintegrate, with most debris expected to fall into the waters surrounding Point Nemo. This reentry can be quite violent, with high-speed projectiles hurtling toward the ocean. Targeting Point Nemo minimizes the risk of hazardous encounters with populated areas.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Graveyard of Satellites
Due to its unique characteristics, Point Nemo has earned nicknames such as "The Graveyard of Satellites" and "Spacecraft Cemetery." Currently, approximately 161 man-made objects are scattered across the ocean floor in this area, including remnants of the Russian Mir space station.
