Overthinking: A Barrier to Happiness and Creativity

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Overthinking

Overthinking can extinguish the happiness in our lives. Just when I start to feel a spark of excitement, my mind begins to spiral into overanalysis…

I’ve been wrestling with feelings of depression for quite a while. While I’ve never received an official diagnosis, my long-term feelings and a few months of treatment make it clear that I’ve experienced some level of depression. However, in the last five months, I’ve noticed improvements as I focus on cultivating joyful moments whenever I can.

I've also been striving to engage in my projects without letting external factors hinder me. I’ve made progress, but the moment I feel a flicker of excitement about my work, overthinking creeps in and extinguishes that joy.

Overthinking is an unhealthy pattern I recognize immediately. It's my mind attempting to manage outcomes in situations that often have nothing to do with my projects, leaving me feeling utterly helpless. This leads to chaos and confusion.

Overthinking Kills My Creativity

I consider myself inherently creative. From a young age, I loved drawing and writing, and I quickly learned tools like Photoshop. Later, I explored Canva and AI image generation. I had a wealth of ideas for projects that could be quite lucrative, and I envisioned a future where I could leave my job to pursue them.

The key to success? Consistency. Unfortunately, overthinking derailed my plans. Personal challenges left my mind preoccupied, and I felt compelled to resolve issues beyond my control, which stunted my progress.

To combat this, I began journaling. By stepping outside of myself and viewing my thoughts as a narrative, I was able to recognize that many situations were indeed beyond my control. While bits of motivation returned, overthinking would often strike again, creating an emotional void that clouded my perspective.

Overthinking Disrupts Sleep and Dreams

Many of us know the struggle of feeling drained during the day, only to lie awake at night with racing thoughts, desperately seeking answers to life’s challenges. I’m one of those people. I often found myself blaming my kids, family dynamics, or my past choices for my sleepless nights. I’d spiral through thoughts about missed opportunities and additional responsibilities, all while trying to figure out how to manage my time better.

Sound familiar? This is the essence of overthinking. It weaves together various threads of concern until they form a heavy burden that weighs down our happiness.

I’d often find myself reflecting on childhood events, analyzing what I could have done differently years ago. This pattern of thought would consume hours of my night and leave me with dark circles under my eyes as a reminder of my struggles.

Overthinking Can Dull Life's Joys

This leads me to why I am sharing my story today. Recently, I woke up thrilled to see that one of my stories was published and had received an overwhelming response in just a few hours.

I felt immense joy and gratitude for the positive feedback I had received. However, as I reveled in this happiness, thoughts of when I would see my boyfriend again and doubts about returning to my mundane job crept in, overshadowing my excitement.

Suddenly, the joy I felt was replaced by a torrent of worries and nostalgia, forcing me to push those thoughts away to maintain my productivity and creativity.

Strategies to Combat Overthinking

After many hours of therapy, introspection, and supportive conversations with my boyfriend, I’ve discovered methods to curb my overthinking before it spirals out of control.

One powerful phrase has become my mantra: “It is what it is.” Repeating this helps me acknowledge that some aspects of life are beyond my influence.

We must learn to let go of thoughts that serve no purpose, journaling them if necessary, and move forward. Overthinking past events doesn’t change them, and speculating about the future is futile since we can never predict what tomorrow will bring.

A Gentle Reminder

Remember, we can’t control everything. Sometimes, despite our wishes for certain outcomes, the universe has its own plans. We just need to relax and allow things to unfold as they are meant to.

Thank you for taking the time to read my reflections! 🦋
