A Memorable Breakfast Experience with a Transgender Waitress

Chapter 1: Breakfast in Cancun
During our recent trip to Cancun, my wife and I enjoyed a delightful breakfast at a charming café. We savored waffles adorned with tropical fruits and whipped cream—truly a treat!

Section 1.1: Affordable Healthcare in Mexico
One of the perks of living in Mexico is the significantly lower cost of medical tests. I can have my hormone levels checked for a fraction of what I would pay in the US. Both my wife and I can get comprehensive blood tests for around $35, with same-day results. It’s remarkable—when have you ever seen such efficient medical service in the US?
Admittedly, some processes in Mexico seem to take an eternity, while others are completed in no time. We're still adjusting to the local way of doing things.
Section 1.2: An Unexpected Encounter
After our hospital appointment, we wandered across the street for breakfast at a place called The Rooster. I had a perfect view of a colorful rooster mural while seated opposite my wife, which meant I couldn't easily see the staff behind me.
Initially, a gentleman who spoke some English took our order. We opted to share the waffles, and I couldn't resist having two! They were scrumptious, and the coffee came with unlimited refills.
As the waitress refilled our coffee, I noticed my wife intently watching her. Once the waitress stepped away, my wife turned to me and asked if the waitress was transgender. Indeed, she was a transgender woman, and my wife beamed with joy. She is genuinely striving to be an ally and to comprehend the challenges that transgender individuals face in society.
Chapter 2: Reflections on Identity
Section 2.1: Personal Growth and Change
My wife expressed a desire to let her hair grow out, feeling dissatisfied with her current short style. I explained that there’s no secret formula—she just needs to be patient. The awkward phase is inevitable, but it’s part of the journey. I remember how I looked during my own messy hair growth phase; it was quite a sight!
Tomorrow marks an important milestone for me—my first Zoom meeting with a transgender support group. I’m filled with anticipation as I prepare to share my experiences.
Section 2.2: Sharing My Journey
I plan to begin by discussing how I’ve understood my gender identity as different from male since I was four years old, a realization that came with its own set of challenges. Additionally, my teachers suspected I might be on the autism spectrum, but my parents never pursued formal testing, leaving me in uncertainty.
When it comes to pronouns, I prefer They/Them. Neither She/Her nor He/Him feels comfortable for me. I find myself fitting into the nonbinary category, as I express my identity through feminine clothing without fully embracing being a woman. Ideally, I’d love to wear dresses and feel beautiful, but the attention from men can be unsettling.
As I embark on this new chapter with the Zoom support group, I want my wife to be with me, even if just off-camera. She prefers not to be seen online, and that’s perfectly fine. My hope is that we can navigate this journey together.
