Maximize Your Writing Earnings: Three Essential Strategies

Chapter 1: The Journey to Over $200,000 in Writing
Since March 2020, I have been a full-time writer, successfully earning over $200,000 through ghostwriting for clients around the globe. While the experience has been exhilarating, I've also encountered several missteps that stunted my business growth and nearly pushed me back into the corporate world. To help you avoid my pitfalls, here are three crucial strategies to implement from the beginning.
Section 1.1: Establishing Your Personal Brand
Creating a personal brand is essential. As a writer, you are essentially running a business, and the income you generate is closely linked to how potential clients perceive your value.
Initially, when I began ghostwriting, I was virtually invisible. I lacked a website, social media presence, or a Medium profile, relying solely on Upwork for new opportunities.
While this method worked for a time, it was ultimately unsustainable and inefficient. Instead, focus on developing your personal brand from the outset. Regularly publish content that fosters trust and establishes your authority, allowing you to convert leads into paying clients.
Section 1.2: Clarifying Your Offer
In my early days, I was quite disorganized in my approach. Relying solely on job platforms to find work meant I had no control over the projects I took on. The clients dictated the scope, style, and payment for their offers, leaving me at their mercy.
It's crucial not to fall into this trap. Instead of waiting for opportunities, create your own offers tailored to potential clients. Consider establishing tiered offerings such as:
- Low-ticket DIY guide
- Mid-ticket DIY guide plus consultation
- High-ticket all-inclusive ghostwriting services
By taking charge of your offerings, you can significantly enhance your business.
Section 1.3: The Importance of Continuous Improvement
You've likely heard the advice to keep learning, but do you truly grasp its significance? I thought I did until I experienced firsthand the consequences of stagnation. As a solopreneur, ongoing education is not optional; it's essential for survival.
During a prosperous period, I grew complacent and neglected to expand my knowledge in critical areas such as:
- Building a sales funnel
- Generating leads
- Enhancing my personal brand
- Conducting effective outreach
I simply responded to job requests, which ultimately led to stagnation.
Now, I ask myself two key questions to ensure I am continually learning:
“Am I feeling slightly uncomfortable due to a gap in my knowledge that is relevant to my business? Am I actively working to address this discomfort?”
If I can answer yes, I know I’m on the right track. If not, it’s a clear signal to seek out new learning opportunities.
By focusing on these three strategies—establishing a personal brand, creating compelling offers, and committing to lifelong learning—you can significantly elevate your writing business from the start.
