Feminism and the Importance of Research: A Call for Credibility

Written on

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Misinformation

It seems that every time I encounter another irate article by a feminist who recently discovered academic resources, my patience wears thin. I’m reluctant to name specific individuals or respond directly, as I prefer not to be the kind of writer who thrives on disparaging others. Disagreement is part of constructive discourse, and as a feminist myself, I value diverse perspectives and enlightening discussions. However, the alarming prevalence of poorly substantiated (or entirely unsubstantiated) articles raises significant concerns.

Such practices contribute to the spread of misinformation.

I had always thought Medium was a platform that prioritized high-quality, well-researched content. It's disheartening to see it becoming akin to Facebook, which is often criticized for disseminating false information! The emotionally charged nature of many feminist articles seems to draw significant attention, allowing women to express their frustrations over sexism. I empathize — as someone with South Asian heritage, I am acutely aware of the realities of sexism. However, this does not justify writing sensationalized articles that often generalize men as the enemy, devoid of any credible evidence to support such claims.

While many attempt to adopt a bold and irreverent tone akin to Mark Manson, the truth is that few manage to approach his level of insight. Manson, despite not holding an advanced degree in psychology (to my knowledge), consistently backs up his assertions with research. He doesn't make unfounded statements. Though I have mixed feelings about his work, I acknowledge that his success stems from providing evidence to bolster his claims, distinguishing him from mere disgruntled voices.

I strive to refrain from directly criticizing individual feminist articles. However, the rampant spread of misinformation compels me to consider taking action. If I were to write counter-arguments that are well-cited, I fear they might go unnoticed, or worse, be dismissed by those unwilling to engage with opposing viewpoints. Perhaps I could even lose whatever minimal following I have (currently just 26 followers).

Engaged readers of Medium, it’s crucial that we address the disinformation being propagated by inadequately cited feminist articles. I urge those who typically stay silent to step forward. While I understand that many prefer to avoid controversy, it is vital for the integrity of our discourse that we produce well-researched articles that challenge these unfounded assertions. If you are interested, I am willing to assist in this endeavor!

There is a plethora of feminist articles making sweeping claims about human behavior and science, accumulating thousands of views and accolades, yet lacking any references. While I’m not suggesting that every piece should resemble a scholarly article, some degree of citation is necessary when making radical assertions that one expects to be accepted as fact.

Jordan Peterson discusses the motivations behind his public persona, sharing insights on the challenges he faces and the broader implications of his message.
