Exploring the Dynamic Role of a Science Communicator

Written on

Chapter 1: The Diverse Landscape of Science Communication

Science communication encompasses a wide range of activities beyond the iconic figures like Bill Nye or Neil deGrasse Tyson. While hosting television shows is one avenue, there are countless other projects that professionals in the field undertake. For instance, here are ten initiatives I have been involved with since launching my full-time science communication venture:

  1. I served as both interviewer and host for two episodes of the XSTEM series at the USA Science and Engineering Festival.

  2. I'm currently preparing for a significant research expedition later this year as an onboard outreach officer for the JOIDES Resolution ship. This preparation involved visits to College Station, Texas, and Bristol, UK.

  3. I submitted an application for another potential science expedition with a different outreach initiative planned for the following year.

  4. I produced eight science videos for CBS Mission Unstoppable’s TikTok and Instagram, in addition to hosting several Twitch streams for the program.

  5. I have provided consulting services to various science-focused organizations on enhancing their social media presence and written materials.

  6. I created sponsored content that highlighted the engineering programs at the University of Texas at Austin, showcasing potential careers in the field.

  7. I recently pitched and secured a contract to develop an online course on engineering communication for LinkedIn Learning, with scripting and filming to commence soon.

  8. I have authored articles for several platforms, including Make Magazine, Engineering.com, Lulzbot, and Beanz, a children’s science magazine.

  9. I produced an investment video for a startup focused on environmental solutions.

  10. I also generate science and engineering content for my personal social media channels, with plans to increase this focus in the future.

These examples illustrate just a fraction of the varied projects that science communicators engage in. There are many more initiatives in progress, reflecting the dynamic nature of our work.
