Last month marked the arrival of the first iPhone update for the year, yet Apple is already gearing up for its next iteration. This week saw the release of the initial iOS 16.4 beta, which provides a glimpse into the enhancements that await your device. Let's delve into the features that are on the horizon for your iPhone!
New Features in iOS 16.4
The previous update, iOS 16.3, introduced several enhancements, particularly in security and privacy. Users can now secure their Apple ID with a physical security key, and iCloud benefits from advanced data protection features. With the upcoming iOS 16.4, a suite of new functionalities is on the way. Here are some of the most significant ones, keeping in mind that additional features may be introduced or existing ones removed before the final release.
New Emojis
It's been a while since we've seen fresh emojis, despite their announcement last year during World Emoji Day. In iOS 16.4, you can finally look forward to new additions, including a donkey, jellyfish, and various bean types.
Website Push Notifications
Mac users have enjoyed push notifications from websites for some time, receiving alerts about the latest news. Soon, iPhone users will also benefit from this feature, which Apple previewed during WWDC last year. Notifications will appear on your lock screen, in the notification center, and on paired Apple Watches. To utilize this, you must add your favorite websites as apps on your home screen, which can now be done through browsers like Chrome from the Share menu. A red badge will appear when notifications arrive, similar to regular apps. These notifications can also be managed through Focus settings.
HomeKit Architecture Revamp
Apple has previously committed to a significant update of HomeKit’s architecture, promising improved speed and reliability, especially for smart homes with numerous accessories. Although the initial introduction with iOS 16.2 faced issues leading to a retraction, a fresh attempt is underway with iOS 16.4.
Enhanced Battery Management Screen
The always-on display of the iPhone 14 Pro can drain the battery significantly. With iOS 16.4, you’ll be able to better monitor this through 'Settings > Battery.' If the battery usage is excessive, you can opt to disable the always-on feature.
Audio App Improvements
iOS 16.4 introduces a Channels menu in the Podcasts app, allowing publishers to group their shows more effectively. The app will also feature an improved layout to help users track what they have and haven’t listened to. In CarPlay, the app has received a streamlined update. Additionally, the Music app will now display the profile button more prominently across various tabs for easier access to your settings.
Expanded Shortcuts Capabilities
Shortcuts enable users to automate tasks on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac. With the upcoming update, new building blocks will be introduced, allowing for even more sophisticated automation, including features that lock the screen and control the always-on display. An option to enable or disable Stage Manager on the iPad will also be available.
Simplified Beta Sign-Up Process
Historically, signing up for iOS betas has been a bit cumbersome. However, with iOS 16.4, the process becomes more user-friendly, eliminating the need to download a profile. Betas will now have their own section within the settings under software updates.
Additional Innovations
Beyond the major features listed above, iOS 16.4 will also include a variety of smaller enhancements. For instance, users will soon see warranty information for devices linked to their Apple ID within the Settings app. If you share a link to the alternative social network Mastodon via Messages, a preview will be generated. The Tips app will also expand to include manuals for other Apple devices, alongside your iPhone.
When Can You Expect iOS 16.4?
While the official release date for iOS 16.4 remains uncertain, it is anticipated to be available for general download by the end of March or in April.
