You Must Take Control of Your Memory!

Written on

Understanding the Forgetfulness Phenomenon

Imagine this scenario: You had plans to do laundry, and during dinner, you suddenly remember that your bed sheets need washing. After your meal, you collect your dirty clothes to head to the washer, only to realize you left those sheets behind!

Oops! It slipped your mind!

You prepped a sandwich to take to work after breakfast. When you went to grab your jacket, it dawned on you that the jar of mayonnaise was left on the counter. You reassure yourself that you’ll return it to the fridge as you leave. However, upon returning home, you find that the jar is still sitting there—unattended and still open—resulting in a $6.00 waste!

What happened?

I have a theory!

Your subconscious was informed that you would complete these tasks. Unfortunately, it now believes those tasks have already been accomplished! Consequently, it offers no reminders, leading to your forgetfulness. In the eyes of your inner mind, those intentions are as good as done.

This phenomenon can manifest in another way as well.

Let’s say you purchase a captivating book. Upon arriving home, you place it on the shelf to read later. But did you explicitly state to yourself that you bought the book? If you did, your subconscious will deactivate the message, “I want to buy that book.”

However, if you simply shelve the book without acknowledging it, you might find yourself repurchasing it months later when you see it at the bookstore. Before you know it, you could end up with three copies!

When you set a new book on your shelf, be sure to say, “This book is now owned, and I don’t need to buy another.”

It’s not uncommon for people to accumulate multiple jars of salsa in their pantry. Is it hoarding? Not quite! The subconscious has been programmed with a message: “I need a jar of salsa.” If they just place the jar in the cupboard without saying, “I have a jar of salsa, and I won’t need more for a while,” the inner voice keeps reminding them of the salsa necessity. Without a “stop buying” command, they may end up with ten jars over several months!

In my storytelling, I often think of a rustic cabin nestled in the Southern Appalachians, where I sit on the porch, sharing my narrative with someone special!
