The Essential Commodity: Seize the Moment and Create

Chapter 1: The Nature of Time
Time is a perplexing entity. It’s the one resource we can manage, yet it often feels beyond our control. Depending on our choices, time can serve as an ally or an adversary. As I age, I increasingly recognize the fleeting nature of time. Although it may not be slipping away in the traditional sense, I feel the years passing more quickly, and my drive to create seems to stretch infinitely.
To be an artist means to be in a constant state of motion. The creative mind discerns connections and dimensions that demand expression. However, the gap between imagination and realization can leave a lasting impression—either igniting or stifling one’s creative spirit. You envision a masterpiece, but the outcome on canvas hardly resembles your vision. Essentially, it’s like trying to sculpt a David with the tools of a child.
I grew up with the belief that creativity had little financial potential in a society that favored the sciences. It was viewed as a pastime to be enjoyed after fulfilling life’s responsibilities and entering retirement. As a result, my artistic pursuits simmered quietly on the back burner, largely unacknowledged.
With the rise of the digital age came unprecedented opportunities for creativity. Applications provided artists with a comprehensive suite of tools conveniently packed into a lightweight device, paired with a stylus that replicated virtually every artistic style imaginable. Digital artists could explore their creativity without the mess of traditional mediums.
It was a dream come true once I overcame the learning curve and grasped digital techniques. I discovered an expansive realm of art that transcended basic drawing and painting, allowing me to experiment with various materials without the associated costs. More importantly, I began to appreciate the significant role that art plays in our world. Everywhere you look, you’ll find elements shaped by artistic vision—be it fashion, architecture, culinary presentation, or home design—all vying for the attention of consumers who resonate with those styles. Artists, musicians, and writers are fundamental to the cultural fabric of any community.
“Good takes time. Great takes even more time.”
– Amy Shulke, Illustrator and Art Instructor
With this newfound understanding, I developed a greater appreciation for the journey art could take me on, and I was eager to embark on that path. If there’s one regret I hold, it’s that I didn’t dedicate more time to practice. I often wonder where my skills might be today had I invested the same effort into my art as I did in my family and career.
Now, as I reflect on the unrealized potential before me, I feel the weight of lost years and the urgency of time’s passage. Yet, this awareness hasn’t deterred my pursuit; it simply highlights what I could have achieved with a bit more commitment.
Professionals make the craft look effortless, but true mastery requires time—time to make mistakes, to experiment, and to rediscover the world with childlike wonder. Most importantly, it requires the commitment to continuously engage in what you love.
“To draw well, you need to be willing to make a lot of mistakes and learn from them.”
– Brent Eviston, Artist and Teacher
I possess the talent, yet I lack the practice that only time could provide. Consequently, I find myself returning to the basics, reinforcing my foundation. I’m taking the time now that I should have prioritized during my youth. It's not too late; my progress may be gradual, but I can already see growth.
Time is a finite resource. It moves forward relentlessly, indifferent to our pace. Waiting for the “right” moment is often an exercise in futility. Instead, we must act and make the present moment the right time to pursue our passions, nurturing our inner talents before we fully grasp their value.
This is your life and your opportunity to shape it as you see fit. The duration of your time on this spinning planet remains uncertain. So why not invest it in growing your passion and nurturing your dormant talents? Ultimately, how you allocate your time on this earth is the only renewable resource for which you will be responsible.
