The Evolution of Contact Lenses: A Historical Overview
Written on
Chapter 1: The Origins of Contact Lenses
The initial successful contact lenses were far from comfortable. Invented by Dr. Adolf Fick in 1888, these lenses were crafted from blown glass. Despite their innovative design, they came with significant drawbacks. These early lenses were not only heavy and thick but also covered the entire eye, preventing proper oxygen flow. Consequently, wearers could only tolerate them for a few hours due to irritation.
Dr. Fick conducted preliminary tests on rabbits before trying the lenses on himself and a few volunteers. He is often recognized as the pioneer of contact lenses, as he was the first to suggest their potential for precise vision correction.
Section 1.1: Vision Correction Ideas Through History
Interestingly, Fick wasn't the first to envision corrective lenses that sit directly on the eye. In 1508, Leonardo da Vinci proposed a concept involving submerging the head in water to enhance vision. He even designed a device that could be placed over the eye to facilitate this. Similarly, René Descartes introduced a concept in 1836 based on da Vinci's work, suggesting a glass tube filled with liquid to be applied directly onto the cornea. However, this design posed a challenge as it would prevent the wearer from blinking.
Subsection 1.1.1: Advancements in Contact Lenses
The 1930s marked a period of significant progress in contact lens technology following Fick’s invention. The introduction of plastic reduced the weight of the lenses, yet prolonged wear remained uncomfortable due to the lenses still covering the entire eye. Custom casts were necessary to achieve a proper fit.
Chapter 2: A Breakthrough in Contact Lens Technology
In 1948, Californian optician Kevin Tuohy developed the first all-plastic lenses that only covered the cornea, rather than the entire eye. These hard lenses provided a more comfortable option for extended wear, but they still faced a major limitation as they could not allow oxygen to pass through.

The real turning point in contact lens technology came in 1959 with the invention of soft contact lenses, or hydrogel lenses, by Czech scientists Otto Wichterle and Drahoslav Lim. These innovative lenses allowed for greater oxygen permeability, revolutionizing the experience for contact lens users. Since their introduction, contact lens technology has only continued to improve.
