Chasing Dreams: Embracing Reality and Finding Fulfillment

Written on

Chapter 1: The Harsh Reality of Dreams

At some stage in our lives, we must confront a difficult truth: despite the childhood affirmations that proclaimed, “YOU CAN BE ANYTHING YOU WANT,” not every aspiration will materialize. Tough pill to swallow, right?

This isn't a groundbreaking revelation—I'm not the first to say, “Hey, this might not turn out the way you hope.” But it’s something that’s been weighing on my mind recently. The optimistic belief that if you wish hard enough, the universe will align in your favor is a comforting thought. However, reality often tells a different story.

Many of us won’t become astronauts, grace the pages of Forbes, or even find ourselves in romantic encounters with celebrities like Ryan Gosling or Mila Kunis. Life often holds desires that remain unfulfilled, and that’s simply how it goes.

I don’t want to come across as a downer, scowling at the aspirations of others. I genuinely support lofty ambitions and the pursuit of grand goals. The issue arises when those dreams become all-consuming. When everything you have is pinned on a singular goal, the stakes are high. You could achieve greatness, but what happens if you don’t?

How do you carry on when life feels a bit underwhelming, like it’s lacking the vibrant colors you once envisioned? What if that coveted dream remains just out of reach?

For many, growing older seems more about checking off tasks than fulfilling the dreams we scribbled about in childhood journals. Our days often revolve around mundane responsibilities like grocery shopping, updating LinkedIn profiles, or using coupons before they expire, rather than grand aspirations like “Becoming Oprah.”

I had a moment of genuine excitement over a new pair of socks recently, so I’m not saying adulthood is devoid of joy. Yet, it’s essential to acknowledge that life isn’t a movie. It’s perfectly fine to not be under 30 with a robust bank account and an impressive résumé. It’s okay to stumble and learn as we navigate life.

Accepting that some dreams may not come to fruition is part of the process. It can sting when reality falls short of expectations. You might find that job promotion slipping away, or that intriguing stranger may not reciprocate your interest. The truth is, you can’t always become everything you aspire to be.

But here’s the silver lining:

You can dedicate yourself to hard work. Pursue your passions and focus on what truly brings you joy, even if it doesn't directly lead to financial gain. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you can't pursue everything right now. There are times in life when we must prioritize responsibilities over dreams. Saying “chase your dream” can often feel isolating; it’s not something everyone can achieve instantly.

So take incremental steps toward fulfillment. Instead of picturing yourself as a stadium-filling musician, simply play your music. Hone your craft and remember your “why.” Is it for the love of the art, or is it merely a piece of an unrealistic dream?

Stay engaged! WORK hard! Surround yourself with people who share your interests—not just for networking, but to forge meaningful friendships. Embrace laughter and recognize that falling down is part of life. Getting bruised is simply a part of the journey.

I often discuss dreams, and perhaps I’m exhausting myself in the process. There are days when I feel close enough to grasp my aspirations, yet I always crave more. It’s like someone keeps taking my plate away before I’m finished.

I hope I never cease striving for growth, for engaging in activities that inspire me. Yet, perhaps it’s time to reframe the concept of “chasing a dream.” Why should we be in a constant state of pursuit? This isn’t gym class. So, tell your dream to come after you instead.
