Awakening Through Nihility: Climate Change and the Spiritual Quest

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Mind and Heart

In my previous article, I explored the distinction between knowledge derived from intellect and that which comes from the heart. When we grasp concepts intellectually, we often create a separation from the subject we are examining. Reason acts as a barrier between us and the essence of what we study. Conversely, when we engage with something emotionally, our connection is immediate and unfiltered.

To quote a relevant thought, "When we experience something from the heart, we know it directly. It is unmediated."

I recently viewed a video highlighting the devastating effects of climate change. Approaching it from a rational perspective allows for a detachment, where we may feel we already understand the information or critique its details. This mental distancing can serve as a defense mechanism against confronting the pressing issue at hand. However, engaging with the video emotionally enables us to truly feel the anguish, suffering, and senselessness that climate change imposes upon our world.

Section 1.1: The Gravity of Climate Change

Climate change presents an existential crisis. It challenges our contemporary worldview and suggests catastrophic consequences if we do not act. This issue will ultimately reveal our collective and individual identities.

The primary challenge with climate change is that its threats are often perceived as distant. For instance, today is a beautiful day, with birds chirping joyfully. What could possibly be wrong? Yet, if we delve deeper, we discover a myriad of concerns lurking beneath this serene facade.

Subsection 1.1.1: Recent Insights from The New York Times

Climate change and its consequences

Recently, two articles in the New York Times addressed the impacts of climate change. One article reported that atmospheric carbon levels have reached 421ppm, the highest point in four million years. It was once believed that 350ppm would be the critical threshold, yet no nation is nearing the Paris Agreement's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Compounding the issue, the ongoing war in Ukraine is driving up oil prices, prompting governments to increase oil production to combat inflation. Are we truly aware of these developments?

Another article detailed a three-month heatwave in India and Pakistan, with temperatures soaring above 110 degrees. This extreme heat has forced many to remain indoors, leading schools to close early and businesses to adjust their schedules, ultimately impacting productivity and crop yields. Alarmingly, reports even mentioned birds falling from the sky due to the heat.

What will it take for humanity to awaken to this reality? Are we prepared to witness birds plummeting from the sky regularly? What will occur when it becomes too hot for people to work?

Chapter 2: Nihility and the Search for Meaning

In this context, Japanese philosopher Keiji Nishitani offers profound insights regarding a concept he terms "nihility." This state reflects the realization that life can seem devoid of meaning, an understanding we must confront if we wish to salvage our planet.

Nishitani posits that traversing through nihility is essential for discovering true significance in our existence. He articulates that:

"But it is in breaking through that ordinary mode of being and overturning it from the ground up, in pressing us back to the eternal source of life where life itself is seen as useless, that religion becomes something we need—a must for human life."

Section 2.1: Everyday Life and Nihility

Typically, we navigate our daily lives without encountering nihility. According to Nishitani, our routines are designed to shield us from this experience. We often become so engrossed in our activities that we neglect deeper self-exploration and the quest for life's meaning.

Nishitani states:

"Normally we proceed through life, on and on, with our eye fixed on something or other, always caught up with something within or without ourselves."

We often confront nihility only in the aftermath of personal tragedy, such as losing a loved one or facing a serious illness. In these moments, our usual coping mechanisms—platitudes and beliefs—fail us.

Nishitani asserts:

"We become aware of religion [spirit] as a need, as a must for life, only at the level of life at which everything else loses its necessity and its utility."

Only in these moments of stark reality do we confront life without the filters of our preconceived notions.

The first video titled "Examining the Religious and Spiritual Implications of Climate Change" delves into how climate change compels a spiritual awakening.

The second video also titled "Examining the Religious and Spiritual Implications of Climate Change" further explores the intersection of spirituality and environmental challenges.

Section 2.2: Questions Arising from Nihility

The silver lining is that if we embrace the experience of nihility, Nishitani suggests we embark on a profound "religious" quest, grappling with fundamental questions: Why am I here? What is the purpose of existence?

These inquiries are deeply personal, and each individual must undertake their own journey to seek answers. Nishitani emphasizes that genuine religion emerges from personal experience and engagement with reality.

Nishitani explains:

"By the self-awareness of reality, I mean both our becoming aware of reality and, at the same time, the reality realizing itself in our awareness."

This journey toward true reality transcends intellectual understanding; it requires an emotional connection to our essence.

Nishitani concludes that:

"This fundamental conversion of life is occasioned by the opening up of the horizon of nihility at the ground of life."

Thus, climate change serves as a catalyst, urging us to confront the nihility embedded in our everyday lives and compelling society to awaken from its complacency.
