The Universe's Most Powerful Explosion: What Happened?

Chapter 1: The Cosmic Event Unveiled

In recent years, a sensational piece of news captured the attention of media outlets, from the most extravagant to the highly reputable. This led to a surge of inquiries regarding the incident, such as:

“What does it mean that astronomers have detected the aftermath of the most intense energy release since the Big Bang?”

Let’s explore the details of this extraordinary event.

The revelation stems from a statement released on February 28, 2020, by the International Center for Radio Astronomy Research. According to their findings, scientists have identified remnants of an unidentified explosion located in the Ophiuchus supercluster, which is situated 390 million light-years from Earth.

Interestingly, initial evidence of this explosion was recorded back in 2016, but the notion of an explosion was met with skepticism at that time. It required several years of meticulous verification for scientists to affirm the occurrence.

The explosion is believed to have transpired near a supermassive black hole located within one of the cluster's galaxies. The event resulted in matter being dispersed across a region several times larger than our own galaxy.

Energy dispersion from the supermassive black hole explosion

The energy unleashed during this phenomenon is five times greater than any previously recorded event. As of now, the exact cause of such a colossal energy discharge remains unclear. One of the most credible theories suggests that the supermassive black hole emitted multiple powerful jets in various directions.

When these jets collided with surrounding matter, they displaced it, creating a vast void (illustrated by the dotted curve in the image), although this theory still requires further investigation.
