Three and a half years ago, I initiated a journey of personal development that radically changed my life. I transitioned from struggling with self-doubt to achieving notable success. This process involved addressing issues related to self-esteem, disorganization, and academic challenges, culminating in significant accomplishments like purchasing a home, advancing in my career, and building a fulfilling relationship.
Understanding Personal Values
One of the primary lessons I learned stemmed from Stephen Covey’s "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People." A thought-provoking exercise where I envisioned my own funeral prompted me to consider the legacy I wished to leave behind. I wanted to be remembered as a loving, supportive, and inspirational figure, dedicated to uplifting my community. This insight inspired me to draft a Personal Mission Statement, a written expression of the values I aspire to embody every day. For instance, when offered a lucrative job that required extensive travel, I declined as it conflicted with my commitment to being present for my family and community, reaffirming the importance of living by my values.
Developing Self-Awareness
Enhancing my self-awareness proved to be a pivotal moment in my journey. I began to notice when my emotions and actions strayed from my core values. For example, I realized that stress often led to procrastination, which adversely impacted my productivity and mental health. To counter this, I established a nightly routine that included journaling and planning for the next day, leading to significant improvements in my organizational skills and overall well-being.

This journey helped me learn how to prioritize activities that resonate with my values while eliminating distractions.
Eliminating Distractions
I became aware of the time squandered on unproductive activities, especially on digital platforms. By removing social media apps and employing website blockers, I reclaimed precious hours for more meaningful endeavors, such as reading and spending quality time with loved ones. Additionally, embracing minimalism in my physical environment reduced clutter and distractions, enabling me to concentrate more on my goals.
Engaging in Value-Added Activities
I committed to prioritizing impactful activities, utilizing productivity tools like Todoist. This method allowed me to focus on tasks that offered the greatest value. For instance, in my fitness regimen, I applied the 80/20 rule, concentrating on exercises such as squats, deadlifts, and bench presses for optimal results. This not only improved my fitness but also freed up time for other important pursuits.
Practicing Financial Responsibility
While I have always been frugal, I learned that effective financial management is key to achieving long-term aspirations. By budgeting and investing wisely, I was able to save for a down payment on a house. This financial discipline also granted me the freedom to explore career paths that better align with my values.
Effective Communication
Enhancing my communication skills became essential. I learned to express my needs, feelings, and aspirations openly. Within my relationship, honest discussions about our future, fears, and goals brought us closer and facilitated mutual growth.
