In the world of journalism, finding compelling, current stories is essential. As a beat reporter, it’s your job to uncover engaging content. Newspapers thrive on timely and interesting narratives, and this is where their reporters excel.
In today’s information-rich environment, sourcing current event topics has never been easier. From politics and religion to pop culture and business, the options are vast. Keep an eye on trending topics and write about the stories that captivate audiences.
Photography
Many writers on Medium underestimate the significance of visuals in their articles. The main image is particularly crucial, as it can be the deciding factor for readers scrolling through countless posts.
A striking main image paired with an attention-grabbing headline can halt a reader's thumb. Photography is a vital aspect of your publication. Invest time in selecting the most vibrant and eye-catching images that stand out.
Subscriptions
Gradually, my publication, The Provencio Periodical, is gaining momentum. Building a subscriber base is critical.
Subscriptions are the heartbeat of any publication. While many may know of your Medium page, they might not feel compelled to engage with it regularly. This is akin to your Medium presence; awareness without active interest leads to missed opportunities.
Currently, I have 681 subscribers across my two accounts. However, with over 57,000 people aware of The Professor's Press, only 1.2% are consistently engaged. I strive for more subscribers because those who choose to subscribe are the most dedicated readers.
Medium's algorithm can be challenging, as numerous people have mentioned they often miss my articles in their feeds. This highlights the necessity for more subscriptions to keep our work top-of-mind for readers.
Advertising
Promoting your publication is essential for attracting new subscribers and followers. Once potential readers are aware of your presence, they may be more likely to engage with your content.
Advertising encompasses not only the existence of your publication but also each individual story you publish. There are many avenues for promoting your Medium page, including social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
Delivery
Once your new issue is ready, it’s time to share it with your audience. Choosing between a daily, weekly, or weekend publication schedule is the first step.
I recommend determining what works best for you. As the sole operator of your publication, you handle all aspects of the process. Be realistic about what you can deliver consistently, whether it's daily content or a couple of weekend editions. Your subscribers will appreciate your reliability.
Editor-in-Chief
Ultimately, the title of Editor-in-Chief sums it all up. All decisions regarding your Medium page rest with you. Whatever content you publish reflects on you.
It’s easy to bask in praise when things go well, but it takes true ownership to stand by your work when it invites criticism.
