Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Review: A Switch from iPhone to Galaxy
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to the Z Fold6
This review won't dive into exhaustive details about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6, as many comprehensive assessments already exist online. Instead, I aim to share my unique perspective as someone who recently transitioned from the iPhone 15 Pro Max to the S24 Ultra, making me a new Samsung user. My experience has been largely positive, despite a few minor issues.
Chapter 2: The Decision to Switch
Initially, I didn't plan on changing devices again, as I intended to return to iPhone later this year with the iPhone 16 lineup. However, upon trying the Z Fold6, I realized I hadn't given Samsung's innovative foldable phone a fair chance. Previously, I had only used it briefly, with my longest stint being three months with the Z Fold4 while still primarily using the iPhone.
With that in mind, I decided to make the Z Fold6 my primary phone for the foreseeable future. After just a week of use, I have gathered some insights that may assist in your own purchasing decision.
Section 2.1: Specifications and Pricing
While the specs and pricing for the Z Fold6 can easily be found online, here’s a quick recap for clarity. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy and features a uniform RAM capacity of 12GB. The external and internal displays are slightly larger and significantly brighter, reaching up to 2,600 nits.
The Z Fold6 retains the same battery as its predecessor but promises additional hours of usage. The camera setup remains largely unchanged, featuring a 50MP main sensor. In terms of design, Samsung has adopted the matte finishes from the S24 series, making the phone smaller and lighter compared to the Z Fold5. The color options include silver, pink, navy, black, and white, with the latter two being online exclusives—I opted for the white variant.
The pricing starts at £1,799 for the base 256GB model, while the 1TB variant is priced at £2,099.
Chapter 3: Personal Impressions of the Z Fold6
Here are my initial observations after a few days with the Z Fold6. As someone who has used various foldable devices, including earlier Z Fold models, I can provide insight into Samsung’s latest offering.
Section 3.1: The Display Experience
One notable improvement is the reduced visibility of the crease on the Z Fold6. While I've never found the crease bothersome, Samsung has made strides in minimizing its prominence, making it less noticeable during regular use.
Carrying the Z Fold6 while closed is quite satisfying. It's comfortable to hold in one hand, which is essential for a device of this price range. While it may not be significantly lighter than the Z Fold5, it feels manageable.
When opened, the Z Fold6 lies flatter than its predecessors. Although this doesn't impact the functionality, it provides a more aesthetically pleasing appearance when in use.
However, when folded, the camera bump causes the phone to wobble, making it less stable when placed on a flat surface. This can be remedied with a case, but it's an annoyance for those who prefer using the phone without one.
Section 3.2: Camera Performance
Regarding the camera, the Z Fold6 produces excellent photos, especially with its wide and standard lenses. However, it’s puzzling why Samsung hasn’t equipped it with the same camera features as the S24 Ultra. Given that this is a flagship device, the absence of a 5x optical zoom is disappointing, and the 3x zoom does not compensate for it.
On a positive note, I'm enjoying the expansive internal display, which is where Samsung's expertise in foldable technology truly shines. The operating system is optimized for this format, making it a joy to use for productivity.
The cover display has also seen improvements, and while it's only marginally wider than its predecessor, I find it more enjoyable to use.
The Z Fold6 is the first phone I've used since the iPhone 13 mini that I can comfortably operate with one hand. This is particularly beneficial when multitasking, like sending messages while managing other tasks.
Section 3.3: Battery Life and AI Features
In terms of battery life, the Z Fold series isn't known for lasting more than a day. While it can stretch into a second day, that's quite a challenge. This is a noticeable downgrade from the S24 Ultra, but I’m willing to accept it given the device's other advantages.
The Z Fold6 also incorporates Galaxy AI features from the S24 series, with some adaptations for the larger screen. However, I'm curious about how much users actually care about AI in smartphones compared to traditional features like camera quality and performance.
Chapter 4: Conclusion—The Future with iPhone
Although it’s early days with the Z Fold6, I am enjoying my experience and plan to stick with it for the foreseeable future. This means the iPhone will need to compete for its place in my daily routine once again.
The silver lining for Apple is the Z Fold6's camera limitations. I can’t solely rely on Samsung's latest foldable for my professional photography and videography needs, which means I still require an iPhone for those tasks.
In summary, I find myself returning to the routine of using two phones. Such is life in the tech world.
