Reaching 5,000 Followers: My Journey on Medium in Just 10 Months

Building My Audience
Today marks an incredible achievement for me—I've reached 5,000 followers on Medium in just ten months of blogging! This milestone fills me with joy and pride.
At the outset of my writing journey, I understood that cultivating a substantial following would require time and commitment. Before I joined Medium, I had around 4,600 friends on Facebook, which took me years to accumulate since I signed up in 2009. I was quite dedicated, having built a network of over 18,000 friends on MySpace in three years using some unique strategies. Similar principles applied to growing my audience on Medium.
Consistent posting was key, but posting quality content was even more crucial. Initially, I shared mostly inspirational pieces, which garnered attention. However, when I shifted my focus to humor and comedic content, my following really began to soar. I've maintained this approach throughout my 16 years on social media, enjoying countless laughs and forming numerous friendships. I decided to integrate some of these techniques into my writing, as I love to be humorous, and it seems my audience appreciates it too.
Finding Joy in Writing
Making others laugh through my writing feels like the best way to spend my time. As we navigate the complexities of life in 2022, with divisions in society often stemming from politics and religion, I find great value in the role of a writer. It's my main creative outlet, alongside cooking, which I still enjoy. I'm also eager to explore photography as a new creative venture that complements my writing.
So, what contributed to my achievement of 5,000 followers on Medium in just 10 months? Primarily, it required TIME—spent in two significant ways.
The first, unsurprisingly, was through consistent writing. As of now, I have published my 300th blog since the beginning of the year, averaging about one blog every day over the past 287 days. I set a goal to publish 365 blogs in my first year. Despite a slow start in February due to content writing commitments, I’m on track to meet this goal.
The Challenge of Content Writing
While content writing is a practical way to earn money, it drained my motivation. I transitioned back to part-time blogging on Medium and felt a renewed sense of enthusiasm. The humorous blogs I create are the most enjoyable for me. When the state of the world frustrates me, I find it easy to write candidly, but my favorite pieces are the lighthearted ones.
Eventually, I reduced my content writing to part-time and then stopped altogether. I aimed to produce 365 quality blogs by the end of 2022, believing that if I enjoyed my writing, financial success would naturally follow.
However, I also recognized that I could speed up my growth with strategic planning and hard work. I experimented with different methods and uncovered some secrets along the way, realizing that I could gain approximately 1,000 new followers each month.
I won't delve into all the strategies I have learned in this post. I've discussed many of them in previous articles. However, I will mention that in addition to consistent blogging, I've spent countless hours following fellow writers.
How many writers did I need to follow to accumulate 5,000 followers? Let's do some quick math!
I've detailed the maximum number of Medium writers one can follow daily, which is 120. I've adhered to this limit every day for over three and a half months, resulting in an average gain of over 1,000 followers per month.
To reach my current total of 5,023 followers, I followed 23,784 writers on Medium, meaning that about 21.1% of them followed me back. While this ratio isn't stellar, I’m grateful for the connections.
The Importance of Community
Following that many writers over ten months has required time and effort, but I'm committed to my goals. If I had known earlier that this was the path to reaching 10,000 followers in ten months, I would have written about that instead.
While some may not see the benefit in following as many writers as possible on Medium, that’s perfectly fine. Everyone has different aspirations for their writing journey. The goals I set might differ from yours, and I respect that. We’re all on unique paths, and I’m pleased with the direction mine is taking. I have confidence that I’ll eventually achieve the ambitious objectives I envision for my blogging career and aspire to be among the top bloggers globally.
I will persist in my efforts. One wonderful aspect of following so many writers is the opportunity to forge incredible friendships. Although only about 5-10% of my followers engage with my posts, I value those interactions deeply.
The connections I've made with fellow writers mean the world to me. We’ve shared laughter, sorrow, camaraderie, and even some debates, all of which I cherish. I’m confident that our conversations will continue regardless of how many followers we each have.
Thank you to everyone who has followed and supported my writing. Your encouragement means more to me than you can imagine. I hope to give back as much as I receive from this fantastic community. While I’d love to mention all 5,000 of you, that would take too long—I have more writing to do!
