Overcoming Anxiety: 3 Practical Steps for a Calmer Life
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Anxiety
Anxiety affects many individuals, manifesting through sensations such as a racing heart, unsettled stomach, and overwhelming thoughts. It's a common experience that many can relate to, yet it remains a mysterious condition for many.
According to the National Academy of Sciences, anxiety is defined as “an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure.” The terms “disorder” or “disease” suggest that there is something inherently wrong when anxiety takes hold.
My perspective on anxiety is that, while it’s a prevalent experience, its roots can be quite elusive. Although we know that anxiety often arises from excessive worrying, it can be challenging to pinpoint the exact cause when we find ourselves spiraling into anxious thoughts.
Have you ever asked yourself, “Why can’t I stop thinking about this?” and received no clear answer? More often than not, it feels like a chaotic explosion inside your mind.
While I am not a psychologist and cannot provide professional advice, I can share insights drawn from my own experiences. I believe that overcoming anxiety involves strategies that are more about perception than technology.
Section 1.1: Step 1 - Embrace Slowing Down
To combat anxiety, it’s vital to practice slowing down—not just in moments of high stress, but in your daily life. Our fast-paced, information-saturated world bombards our brains with stimuli at every turn, from the moment we wake up to when we lay down to sleep.
Consider waking up just 15 minutes earlier and taking your time getting ready for the day. Instead of rushing through meals while distracted by screens, try savoring each bite and focusing on the flavors of your food.
Furthermore, set a rule to avoid using your phone for at least 30 minutes before bed to help calm your mind.
While these suggestions might sound simple, I understand they can be challenging, especially for younger generations who are often glued to social media and digital devices. However, cultivating a slower pace in your mind can be just as important as doing so physically. Remind yourself that it's okay to take your time and that the world won't end if you slow down.
Section 1.2: Step 2 - Shift Your Inner Dialogue
It’s likely that your belief in having anxiety is already well-established, possibly leading you to start conversations with phrases like, “I have anxiety, and it’s been getting worse.”
But pretending everything is fine when it's not won’t bring about real change. Instead, consider reframing your thoughts: replace “I suffer from anxiety” with “I am no longer experiencing anxiety.” This subtle shift acknowledges your past experiences without allowing them to define your present.
Even if anxious thoughts arise occasionally, you can affirm your progress toward healing. Declare, “I am recovering from this, and while these thoughts may come, they do not control me.”
In essence, it’s challenging yet effective. Your mind holds incredible power, and by training it to identify you as “healed” rather than “disordered,” you can foster a more positive self-image.
Section 1.3: Step 3 - Manage Sensory Input
Be mindful of overwhelming sensory information. Avoid situations where you engage multiple senses simultaneously, as this can lead to chaos and stress.
For instance, try not to eat while listening to loud music or tackling homework in a room filled with strong scents. The brain becomes fatigued when it must process too many stimuli at once, leading to overwhelming sensations.
Consider the analogy of an internet browser with too many tabs open—it's easy to feel lost and stressed. To combat this, reduce unnecessary sensory input and allow your mind to rest.
In conclusion, these recommendations may seem straightforward, but they can significantly impact how you manage anxiety. Give them a try and see how they work for you!
