Human beings have an innate tendency to craft elaborate narratives in the wake of certain occurrences, seeking to make sense of them. This leads to questions like:

• Why did this happen?
• Is there an inherent meaning behind this?
• Was this triggered by something beyond my comprehension?
• What is the explanation?

Take, for instance, the world of art criticism. For centuries, critics have captivated us with their intricate theories and analyses of artistic works. They might proclaim, "The artist's anguish is palpable in this piece; the techniques and colors employed convey a specific message." Such claims are often heard when discussing the works of artists like Vincent Van Gogh. Even in the case of something as seemingly straightforward as his painting "Chair," debates arise over its symbolism and the artist's intentions. However, one could argue that sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.

We know from historical accounts that Van Gogh struggled with mental illness and alcoholism, but that doesn’t necessarily imply he aimed to communicate a specific message through this painting. Perhaps he was simply bored one rainy day in Auvers-sur-Oise with an empty absinthe bottle, and chose to paint his chair. The truth of his intentions remains elusive; sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.

While this interpretation may hold truth, it’s equally plausible that Dickens was merely observing an unpleasant man in a top hat during a snowy evening in Holborn, which inspired him to create a charming Christmas tale. Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.

Chapter 3: The Quest for Meaning in Psychology

Returning to Freud and the field of psychology, it’s common to search for hidden meanings. Consider the case of Jimmy, a 25-year-old engineer in London. His childhood was happy, filled with supportive parents and a loving sister. He graduated with honors and enjoys a good life, yet he is unpleasant and difficult to understand.

This may lead psychologists to ponder:

• What caused his behavior?
• Did something significant go unnoticed in his past?
• Was he subjected to some form of trauma?

Despite his seemingly ideal upbringing, Jimmy's character flaws exist, and sometimes, that’s simply the way it is. Mental health professionals might spend years seeking an explanation, poring over research and manuals, but often, no clear answer emerges. While the pursuit of knowledge is noble, we must acknowledge that not every situation has a straightforward explanation. Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.
