Inspiring Legacy: Celebrating Merri Dee's Impact on My Life

Chapter 1: Remembering Merri Dee
During Women’s History Month, I had the intention to share more reflections, but my busy schedule made it challenging. Nonetheless, I couldn’t let the month end without honoring an extraordinary woman who profoundly influenced my life: Merri Dee. Her passing in March left me heartbroken and in disbelief.
Merri Dee was a remarkable figure. In the early 1990s, I had the privilege of interning under her guidance, and eventually, she offered me a job. I spent two transformative years working with her at WGN-TV before I took my leap into Hollywood. Merri became not just a mentor but also a dear friend and confidant, supporting me through every challenge. She even arranged for her brother, whom I fondly refer to as Uncle Buster, to host me in Los Angeles until I found my own place. Their kindness made me feel like family.
When Merri passed away unexpectedly, it felt surreal, especially since she had just done a photo shoot weeks prior. In tribute to her legacy, the City of Chicago honored her during Women’s History Month, displaying her image on billboards and bus stops throughout the city.
It's as if her spirit knew it was time to ascend, ensuring that her radiant smile would greet the city she loved so much. Chicago was her home, and her community was everything to her. Without the love and mentorship of Merri Dee, I wouldn't have the confidence to pursue my dreams today.

In the wake of her passing, I shared my grief on Facebook, and I’d like to revisit those feelings here. Merri was a pivotal figure not only in my life but in the lives of many others. I want to do my part to ensure her legacy continues.
My Mornings with Merri
In 2013, Merri Dee published a book chronicling her life, and I bought it with the intention of reading it—yet I never did. I often wonder why I procrastinated. Was it because I had already heard many of her stories? Or was I simply too busy?
It's interesting how we take the presence of loved ones for granted until they are gone. After Merri’s death, I decided to pull her book off the shelf and began reading a bit each morning, which I affectionately dubbed "My Mornings with Merri." I’m so grateful she wrote this book, as it not only shares her life’s journey but also imparts invaluable lessons on resilience and inspiration. Many of her quotes, which I internalized during my time with her, continue to guide me through life’s challenges.
Another reason I treasure her book is that, following her passing, I found myself wondering who I could turn to for guidance. I know, it sounds selfish, but Merri was my go-to for life's tough questions, both personal and professional. Unfortunately, there were still queries I hadn’t asked her, whether due to embarrassment or fear of her candid advice.
All the questions I had lingered in my mind, but I found their answers within her book. I’m currently rereading it and felt compelled to share my thoughts with anyone who might need a dose of inspiration or encouragement to rise from a dark place. Her story truly motivates you to lead a more vibrant life, not just for yourself, but for those around you.
I may occasionally share inspirational quotes from her, but I encourage you to experience the full impact of her words yourself. One of my favorite lessons from her—which I didn’t find in the book—was her affirmation: “God did not set you up to fail.” I hope this resonates with someone who needs to hear it.
At the time I wrote my Facebook post, I had no idea that my mother would also pass away months later. The grief of losing both of them in the same year can be overwhelming at times. That’s why I chose to revisit my reflections today, even if it’s painful to dig deeper.
