Inspiring Artistry: A Journey Through Experimental Photography

Chapter 1: The Artistic Vision
The project titled Photos_FromPastToFuture serves as a unique avenue for me to express my creativity through unconventional photography methods. These include techniques such as long exposure, double exposure, intentional blurriness, camera movement, and the use of textures and filters.

Photography has always been a passion of mine. As a naturally curious individual, I thrive on experimentation and new experiences. A few years back, I was particularly inspired by a quote from Wynn Bullock, an American photographer celebrated for his experimental techniques during the mid-20th century. His statement, “Instead of using the camera solely to replicate objects, I aimed to make the unseen visible,” struck a chord with me.
I began to explore both digital and analogue photography, utilizing older cameras and pinhole techniques, alongside non-traditional methods. My husband and I even developed analogue photos in a makeshift darkroom set up in our bathroom.
I often classify my photographs as ‘unconventional’ because they defy industry norms and challenge traditional perceptions of photography. The outcomes of my artistic endeavors frequently astonish me; some results are even unsettling, such as self-portraits from my Ghostly series.
Curious about how audiences would react to my work, I decided in 2020 to share my creations via an Instagram account named Photos_FromPastToFuture and offer select images for free download on Unsplash. The response was overwhelming; I discovered that viewers from around the globe connected with my art, and my pieces were featured positively in online photography magazines and utilized as covers for music albums, poetry, and articles. I am immensely grateful for the recognition.
In December 2022, I received exciting news that one of my self-portraits was selected for the cover of the book Anoxia by Spanish author Miguel Angel Hernandez. This novel explores themes of life and death, memory, and our ongoing struggle for survival. Hernandez described my image as having a spectral quality that complements the novel’s atmosphere.
The cover of Anoxia presents a light grey background with my black-and-white photograph of a woman in a flowing white dress, beautifully captured in motion, beneath the publisher's logo, Anagrama, Narativas Hispanicas.
I feel honored that my photo has gained new significance through this incredible narrative, and I hope my work continues to inspire others in the future. This particular image is part of a series of self-portraits that I created using just my iPhone and long exposure techniques. The project was challenging due to space constraints in my home for the backdrop and tripod, often requiring hours or even days of patience to capture the perfect natural light.
Utilizing a monochrome palette and motion blur, I created two ethereal figures titled "Me and I." The resulting image possesses a cinematic quality, inviting viewers to interpret their own stories.
After completing this series, I realized that the process of creating self-portraits allowed me to explore my identity and reveal previously hidden aspects of my multifaceted personality. Embracing an experimental mindset encourages me to push boundaries and grow as an artist.
