Hello, readers and writers! I am thrilled to share another inspiring story from a passionate individual willing to join my interview series. Today, I introduce you to a successful entrepreneur from Singapore, Edmund Chong.
Edmund embodies the millennial spirit, leveraging internet technology to fulfill his aspirations of becoming a digital nomad. His pursuits include achieving both life and financial independence while traveling extensively and assisting others along the way.
As part of the FIRE Movement—an initiative for individuals aspiring to attain financial independence and retire early—Edmund chose the path of a digital nomad, managing multiple ventures to sustain his lifestyle.
He founded HustleVentureSG, a social media news platform focused on personal finance and side hustles, enabling others to explore these avenues and enhance their financial well-being.
Curious about his entrepreneurial journey, income sources, and keys to success? Read on for the full interview and check out his Medium homepage and website for more insights!
Section 1.1: Who Is Edmund Chong?
To summarize myself, I would say my friends and family would describe me as a young and ambitious digital nomad who manages multiple businesses. At the age of 25, I oversee five different side hustles and operate a medium-sized business as the Founder and CEO. My journey toward financial success has certainly not been straightforward, as you'll discover throughout this interview.
In my spare time, I enjoy writing content to express my views about the world. While I do earn some income from writing, it remains a hobby, and I recognize that few writers can attain six-figure earnings in this field.
Subsection 1.1.1: Personal Achievements
One of my proudest accomplishments is starting a business at a young age. When I launched my first venture at 23, many of my friends, who were settled in their 9-to-5 jobs, mocked my ambitions. However, I dedicated my spare hours after work to build my dream, while they chose to enjoy their free time.
The path of a young entrepreneur is fraught with challenges. Older individuals often doubted my capabilities and questioned my business strategies. Despite facing criticism and hardship, I persevered, determined to realize my vision.
After many months of hard work, I successfully grew my business. HustleVentureSG now employs three others who collaborate with me to share financial literacy and various side hustle opportunities.
Section 1.2: Overcoming Insecurities
I often feel insecure about not acquiring enough knowledge. There will always be something new to learn.
What job would I never consider, regardless of the pay? A traditional 9-to-5 role. I prefer to work based on my productivity rather than the number of hours spent on the job. It’s much more fulfilling to schedule my time around tasks that matter rather than being confined to an 8-hour workday for someone else.
Chapter 2: Life Principles and Inspirations
The simplest truth I can express is that while money may not buy happiness, it certainly provides the freedom that can lead to happiness. People often realize this too late in life, having spent their time chasing after money instead of nurturing relationships with loved ones.
What do I wish to have less of in my life? Problems. Like everyone, I encounter various issues, be they personal, financial, or familial. Initially, I thought a life filled with excitement would yield happiness. I’ve since learned that peace and simplicity bring true joy.
What principles guide me? I believe everyone has the same 24 hours; how we choose to utilize that time defines our success. Some pursue degrees while others enter the workforce early, but it’s the ability to seize opportunities that truly adds up over time.
For inspiration, I recently came across a quote: "Write 1,000 articles, and then you’ll know if content writing is for you." Many aspiring writers give up too soon, often before reaching even 100 articles. Writing takes time to master, and patience is key.
What drives me to work each day? The pursuit of self-improvement. I continually seek ways to enhance my efficiency, which has become a significant catalyst for personal growth. For instance, if I aim to work on my fitness, I search for the most effective exercises to achieve my goals.
What change would I like to see in the world? A reduction in the overconsumption driven by capitalism. While money is essential for survival, it's crucial to recognize that beyond basic needs, many desires are luxuries. People often spend their lives chasing wealth, missing out on truly living.
Would I want to live forever? Absolutely not. As Elon Musk once said, the greatest threats to human civilization are stagnation and lack of learning. If we were to discover immortality, the drive for innovation would diminish. Life’s impermanence encourages us to appreciate every moment fully.
Can I share links to my Medium articles? While I don't have personal stories related to relationships, I focus on topics such as personal finance and side hustles—areas often misunderstood. I've created a publication aimed at helping individuals learn effective ways to manage their finances and initiate side projects.
If you're interested in contributing as a writer, I’d love to hear from you!
