Exploring Mental Health and the Paranormal: A New Perspective

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Human Perception

It’s simplistic to label humans as lazy when, in reality, everyone utilizes cognitive shortcuts to navigate their understanding of the world. While we all have room for improvement in how we process information, one shouldn't feel overly proud for merely maintaining the status quo. The essence of reality transcends individual understanding.

In my profession within mental health, I am often seen as an expert in my field. However, I frequently encounter individuals who seem less capable, which can be quite surprising. Is this a sign of arrogance on my part? Perhaps. Nonetheless, it’s important for clients to have confidence in their counselors, as competence often breeds assurance. Acknowledging the existence of archetypes and entities beyond our immediate experience can lead to profound realizations about the world.

Chapter 2: Nostalgia and Reflection on 1979

Could the year 1979 symbolize a tribute to youth, embracing both its joys and challenges? The societal angst experienced during that period resonates with anyone who has transitioned from the innocence of youth to the complexities of adulthood.

It’s hard not to feel a tinge of sadness knowing that we’ve had to start anew, as if our wings were clipped. Perhaps instead of wings, we could liken ourselves to jellyfish. The Turritopsis dohrnii, known as the immortal jellyfish, can revert to earlier life stages, continuously renewing itself.

Reflecting on the song "1979" by The Smashing Pumpkins, I find myself drawn to its melody, which distracts me from its deeper lyrics. I’m left pondering whether to feel melancholic, anxious, or joyful, as the playful act of dressing up and seeking candy brings a sense of nostalgia. Childhood seems to pass swiftly, with my own nine-year-old feeling wise beyond his years—a mere observation, not a lament. I wouldn’t wish for him to remain nine indefinitely; adulthood carries its own treasures.

Yet, there are daunting realities, such as differing perspectives and the inability to connect with others. While society has made strides in addressing mental health issues, we still have much ground to cover. Increasingly, people acknowledge conditions like depression and encourage loved ones to seek professional help. Unfortunately, there are still those who exploit mental health challenges for their own gain, like David Grusch, who faced backlash for expressing controversial views.

Muting individuals for unjust reasons is a troubling trend. When someone with credentials is silenced, it’s essential to question who stands to gain from their silence. The metaphorical "dogs of society" often howl at such injustices.

Chapter 3: Encounters with the Unknown

When it comes to experiences involving ghosts, UFOs, and aliens, anyone can have an encounter that may challenge their sanity. Such experiences can lead to feelings of isolation, particularly when society dismisses these narratives as craziness. Mental health struggles can coexist with extraordinary encounters; experiencing something outside the norm doesn’t negate one's mental state.

The journey of understanding can sometimes illuminate a path to healing. Engaging in shadow work—confronting one's fears and nightmares—can lead to recovery. Avoiding these inner conflicts may offer temporary relief, but ultimately, one must face their truths. Just like Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz," who navigated her way home, we often overlook the power we already possess.

Listening deeply to clients, much like how Glenda guided Dorothy, reveals truths that they may need to uncover within themselves. Recovery isn’t immediate; it requires a journey of self-discovery.

Philip K. Dick, diagnosed with schizophrenia, might have been experiencing realities beyond typical perceptions. Many individuals, including professionals, often misuse diagnoses like PTSD or schizophrenia. Hallucinations can occur in various contexts, including during REM sleep, where the mind can experience vivid dreams or insights.

Daydreaming has historically been dismissed, yet many breakthroughs in science and invention stem from such mental wanderings. Carl Jung understood the therapeutic value of dreams, yet society often disregards these experiences. If the inner life holds the key to understanding archetypes and life’s mysteries, why do we often dismiss those who report extraordinary perceptions?

Chapter 4: The Edge of Reality

Before the advent of modern flight, those who proposed the idea of human flight were labeled as delusional. Now, we recognize their foresight. Similarly, figures like Galileo and Giordano Bruno faced persecution for challenging the prevailing beliefs of their time.

Perhaps those who claim to encounter aliens or spirits exist at the fringes of society, where civilization meets nature. We should explore these boundaries, recognizing that our origins lie within the natural world. Why would we presume to be the only beings stemming from this rich tapestry of existence?

The reality we inhabit is far larger than humanity itself, and our perceptions vary widely. Some of us may witness phenomena that others cannot, but that doesn’t diminish our shared experience as human beings. Each of us occupies a unique position on the vast map of reality.

The first video, "Personality & Mental Health in Paranormal Believers," delves into how belief in the paranormal intersects with mental health, providing insights into the psychological profiles of those who hold such beliefs.

The second video, "Between Life and Beyond: Psychics, Mental Health, and the Human Experience," explores the connections between psychic phenomena and mental health, shedding light on the human experience of these two realms.
