The Essential Role of Reading in Personal Growth and Society

Written on

Chapter 1: The Significance of Reading

Reading is a fundamental activity that shapes our understanding of the world. Mark Twain once remarked, “The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them.” In 2022, I completed 25 fiction books, a meaningful endeavor that deepened my appreciation for literature. For insights into my reading journey, feel free to check out the link below.

25 Books I Read in 2022

This year, my reading count has risen to 27 books, and it’s only October! Once, being termed “well-read” was a prestigious compliment, denoting a person who not only consumes literature but also grasps the nuances of human experiences articulated by authors like Homer and Shakespeare. In today's culture, however, the term has become somewhat stigmatized, with avid readers often labeled as snobs or introverts. When I share my reading habits, common responses include:

  • “For fun?”
  • “Why?”

These queries highlight a significant aspect of our contemporary mindset. Is reading always entertaining? Not necessarily, but that shouldn't deter us from engaging with it. It’s akin to physical exercise; while I might prefer a lively soccer game over a solitary weightlifting session, both activities are essential for maintaining good health. Similarly, some books may be more engaging than others, but the overarching aim should be to strengthen our intellectual capacity.

Here are some relevant statistics:

A study published in the journal Brain Connectivity revealed that engaging with fiction enhances brain connectivity, fostering empathy and understanding of others. Another research indicated that reading improves cognitive abilities and lowers stress levels.

It's alarming that the current generation often questions the value of reading, as it correlates with higher rates of depression, apathy, and lower academic performance. Approximately 44% of American adults do not read at or above a basic level, with the U.S. ranking 17th globally in reading proficiency.

These statistics are disconcerting and reflect the polarization in our society. We seem to have lost sight of the universal human issues we share and the historical mistakes we continue to repeat. The introspective works of great minds from the past offer invaluable lessons that can guide us toward progress rather than complacency, especially as technology advances beyond our comprehension.

Where to Begin

  1. Delve into the Classics

Classics are termed as such for a reason; their narratives remain timeless. The saying, “The classics never go out of style,” holds true as they resonate with the fundamental desires, passions, and fears inherent in humanity. No respected university ignores the contributions of the Greeks, Shakespeare, or Joyce, as their works are crucial for cultivating an educated individual. Even if you start with children’s classics, it’s important to begin somewhere. I suggest exploring local libraries or bookstores for affordable classic literature.

  2. Participate in a Book Club

I was recently invited to join a book club by my neighbor. Initially, I hesitated due to my selective reading preferences, but this challenge turned out to be enjoyable. Our first read wasn't one I'd typically choose, yet it introduced me to a new genre that I found surprisingly delightful. Book clubs also offer the opportunity for enriching discussions with individuals from diverse backgrounds, enhancing your reading experience. Seek out local clubs or consider forming one with friends.

  3. Explore Audiobooks

Many people express difficulty focusing while reading, often leading to wandering thoughts or slow reading pace. Initially, I faced similar challenges since English is not my first language. However, discovering audiobooks opened new avenues for me. With services like Audible, you can access a free audiobook monthly and a vast selection of classic literature in audio format. Listening while reading has significantly improved my comprehension and retention, and audiobooks fit seamlessly into a busy lifestyle, whether commuting or grocery shopping.

For those who already love reading, I encourage you to join a book group that will stretch your literary boundaries and challenge your assumptions. If you’re new to reading, pick up any book that piques your interest and start your journey. A great recommendation to ignite your reading passion is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It’s never too late for self-improvement, and as you grow, you’ll positively influence those around you.

Here are some of my recent book reviews:

  • Book Review: Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis

    A Deep Exploration of Trust

  • Book Review: Animal Farm by George Orwell

    A Powerful Critique of Humanity

  • Book Review: Circe by Madeline Miller

A Contemporary Retelling of an Ancient Goddess

Chapter 2: Enriching Your Reading Experience

The first video titled "The World Needs More Purple People" by Kristen Bell & Benjamin Hart highlights the importance of diversity and understanding in society, emphasizing how we all can contribute to a more inclusive world.

The second video, "The World Needs More Purple People" - Story Time Read Aloud, offers a delightful reading experience that underscores the book's themes of empathy and connection, encouraging audiences of all ages to embrace these values.
