# Don't Take Yourself Too Lightly: A Critical Perspective on Life
Written on
Chapter 1: The Importance of Self-Seriousness
We often hear the phrase "Don't take yourself too seriously," but I argue against this advice for several compelling reasons.
When faced with challenges, such as poor performance in math, the logical step is to seek guidance from someone proficient in that area. Similarly, if you're aspiring to excel in basketball, it makes little sense to study volleyball instead. The same principle applies to life; to achieve success, one should heed the insights of those who have already navigated the path.
Section 1.1: A Reality Check
Nobody's Coming to Rescue You!
It’s a common saying, but it rings true. While support may come from friends, family, or even kind strangers, the ultimate responsibility for steering your life rests solely with you.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Power of Accountability

Embrace Extreme Ownership
A few years back, a friend introduced me to Jocko Willink's book on taking complete ownership of one's circumstances. When you accept full responsibility for your experiences, you can move forward more swiftly and effortlessly. Instead of playing the victim, focus on what actions you can take to alter your situation.
You Are Your Best Advocate
Take a moment to reflect on those you admire for their achievements. Do you think they would have reached their goals without a serious approach? Success is not a matter of chance. Many successful writers on platforms like Medium have dedicated years to their craft. My own achievements stem from unwavering consistency and discipline; nothing I have accomplished happened by accident.
Section 1.2: The Dangers of Underestimating Yourself
I consciously avoid individuals who espouse the idea of not taking oneself too seriously. Achieving anything worthwhile demands a level of seriousness. Even comedians follow a structured approach to their craft. Why would a chef meticulously arrange a dish that you'll only glance at for a fleeting moment? Are PhD candidates able to complete their rigorous studies without a serious mindset? Would you appreciate it if your Human Resources department didn’t take payroll seriously? Your employer certainly expects you to approach your job with seriousness. Every remarkable achievement necessitates a commitment to seriousness. How can you hope to find fulfillment if you don’t respect yourself enough to take your journey seriously?
Chapter 2: Defining Your Own Success
Success is subjective; only you can determine the direction you wish to take in life.
