# A Day in the Life of an Unassuming Worker Amidst Chaos

Written on

Chapter 1: The Morning Routine

Dressed entirely in shades of grey—his jacket, trousers, and canvas shoes matched perfectly—he maintained a meticulously clean appearance, often leaving behind a trace of light blonde stubble in his bathroom sink each morning.

After shutting the doors of his wardrobe, he began organizing his day. Papers and a clear water bottle were packed into his bag, and he grabbed the dull, grey plastic keys from their hook before stepping out onto the street.

The day was scorching and clear, with the sun blazing fiercely even in the early hours, leaving no room for wind as it bore down relentlessly.

The journey to his workplace spanned less than a mile, a fact he appreciated immensely as he walked. The heat was already oppressive, making every moment outdoors feel like a burden.

Summer was in full swing, and as he strolled, he found himself surrounded by towering bushes and vibrant flowers. Rhododendrons and viburnums, once neatly trimmed, now soared towards the sky, defiantly asserting their presence as if challenging the world around them.

His stomach growled with hunger, and he mentally kicked himself for not packing a snack before leaving home. For a fleeting moment, he contemplated retrieving something sweet from his bag, but quickly dismissed the idea.

Determined, he lowered his gaze and quickened his pace, chiding himself for his foolishness.

He held one of those ambiguous jobs that defied easy definition. While teachers educate and salespeople sell, he found himself engaged in something more nebulous—working with numbers, computers, and endless paperwork. His tasks involved entering data and emailing it to clients, a process that somehow resulted in financial transactions, though rarely benefiting him directly.

He was well acquainted with the building he called his workplace: The Ammendment.

The Ammendment

A recent addition to the skyline, The Ammendment towered above every other structure in the city, its light sandy-grey facade visible from miles away. It seemed as though the entire city had adjusted around it, the massive building’s presence warping reality itself to place it at the forefront.

Funded by the government with contributions from various private entities, The Ammendment served as the command center in response to a looming crisis. Constructed at a pace that defied the typical slow growth of urban environments, it was nonetheless outpaced by a threat that had arisen overnight.

He took pride in working at The Ammendment and was always eager to share this fact with acquaintances, although he wasn’t directly involved in high-stakes initiatives. He wasn’t on the cutting edge of technology or engaging in risky negotiations; rather, he preferred to blend in, donning his grey attire and avoiding public breakfast meals.

As he approached the final corner before reaching his office, a refreshing breeze swept in behind him, providing a moment of relief from the heat. This comfort quickly turned to surprise as a torrent of rhododendron blossoms rained down upon him.

The vibrant petals enveloped him entirely, transforming his grey ensemble into a striking display of pink. From afar, he might have even appeared as a flower himself.

Suddenly, his surroundings darkened. Looking up, he was met not with the sun but with the silhouette of an enormous winged creature, its massive form dwarfing any bird he had ever seen. With four wings, six legs, two antennae, and a coiled proboscis, it loomed ominously above him.

In a swift motion, the creature descended like a predator, pinning him to the pavement with force. His head struck the ground, and as his vision blurred, he caught a glimpse of a grotesque, expressionless face—so alien that it hardly seemed appropriate to call it a face at all.

Struggling against the weight of the giant insect proved futile, akin to a mere scolding glance directed at a battleship.

Without fanfare, the proboscis extended, searching for nectar. Although he was an unusual flower, his vibrant color was unmistakable, regardless of the strange taste he might offer.

He was also a screamer, but in this new world, many flowers shared that fate.
